Info | Representative from Nevada; born in Searsmont, Waldo County, Maine, April 22, 1828; attended Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., and Yale College; moved to California in 1849 and engaged in mining; editor and proprietor of the San Jose Tribune 1855-1859; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced practice in Sacramento, Calif.; member of the State assembly in 1861 and 1862; moved to Hamilton, Nev., in 1862 and resumed the practice of law; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1875); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1874; moved to Denver, Colo., and practiced law; assistant librarian in the Interstate Commerce Commission, Washington, D.C., from 1892 until his death; died in Mount Rainier, Md., June 25, 1914; interment in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
