Info | ason was raised in Grundy County and has spent a majority of his life living in Grundy County. Jason grew up on a farm on Nettle Creek Road and graduated Milton Pope Elementary in 1990 as the class valedictorian. Jason was invited back to Milton Pope to speak at their 2015 graduation as a guest speaker to discuss the importance of education.
Jason attended Seneca High School from 1990 to 1994 and graduated in the top of his class. Most Grundy County residents remember Jason working at the Eagle Country Market in Morris from 1992 to 2000.
In 1996, Jason graduated from Joliet Junior College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences in Law Enforcement. During his five semesters at JJC, he focused on law enforcement and completed an internship at the Will County Sheriff’s Department.
In 1999, Jason graduated magna cum laude from the University of St. Francis. Jason earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and graduated with the highest grade point average of any Political Science graduate. While at the University of St. Francis, Jason was named as the outstanding Political Science student of the year for 1997-1998 and was recognized by the faculty for his excellence in research and writing. After graduation, Jason was welcomed back to the University of St. Francis as an adjunct faculty member from 2006 to 2013. Jason taught classes in political science and criminal justice.
Jason attended the John Marshall Law School in Chicago from 2000 to 2003. In 2003, Jason graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctor degree. Jason’s class rank was 33 out of 227. While at John Marshall, Jason was on the Dean’s List 5 times. Jason served as a Supreme Court Rule 711 intern in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office assigned to the domestic violence division during his last semester of law school.
Following law school, Jason began his legal career serving as a dedicated public servant and Assistant State’s Attorney at the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office for 8 ½ years. While in Kankakee, Jason worked in the traffic, aggravated traffic, juvenile, mental health, domestic violence, misdemeanor, and felony divisions. Helland prosecuted 89 jury trials to verdict in Kankakee.
Jason attained his career goal when he was elected Grundy County State’s Attorney on November 6, 2012. Jason has worked as a career prosecutor.
