Info | Dr. Stewart Levenson is a current Republican candidate for the US House of Representatives for New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District. He is a Board Certified Rheumatologist who specializes in diseases of connective tissue. From 2011 until 2017, Dr. Levenson was the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, NH. During this time he also served as the Medical Director of the VA New England Network from 2014-2017. Dr. Levenson holds an academic appointment at Boston University School of Medicine.
Known for his organizational and administrative skills, Dr. Levenson received Director’s Awards from the VA for turning the failing Primary Care and Urgent Care Departments into safe and efficient top performers.
While working at the Manchester VA, Dr. Levenson realized that patients were receiving substandard treatment. As such, he became one of the first-registered and highest-ranking whistleblowers in the country. He co-founded a group of over a dozen whistleblowers who submitted formal complaints about the Manchester facility to the Office of Special Counsel and demanded removal of the medical center’s top leadership. Their complaints were highlighted in a Boston Globe Spotlight article, which drew the swift attention of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Secretary, David Shulkin. At the urging of Dr. Levenson and his group, Shulkin removed the Manchester VA’s director, chief of staff, and nurse executive, and announced that the medical center would receive $30 million in order to provide improved care. Dr. Levenson continues to serve as a passionate advocate for veterans and believes in appropriate, accessible healthcare for all.
Originally from Queens, New York, Dr. Levenson fell in love with New Hampshire nearly 20 years ago, when he came here to train at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He is an avid hunter and has taught Hunter Education through the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department for the past ten years. He was a devoted husband of twenty years until he lost his wife, Claire Lonergan, D.O., to ovarian cancer. Their son, Simon, is currently a senior in college. Dr. Levenson lives in Hopkinton.
