Elected to the Florida Senate from the 6th District in 1972.
Jim Williams was appointed to the St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board in March 1991. A Marion County native, he represented the Ocklawaha River Basin. He owned a real estate company in Ocala and was self-employed as an investor and citrus grower.
Prior to serving with the District, Williams served as lieutenant governor of Florida, a state senator, secretary of the Florida Department of Administration and deputy secretary of agriculture in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was also a citrus grower, real estate developer and cattle rancher.
Williams also served as a director of his local Salvation Army and of Golden Gem Growers, a citrus cooperative in Umatilla.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida.
“(Floridians) are finally looking at the state’s water needs and sources,” said Williams in a 1999 interview. “I think we’re managing them quite well. I’m very optimistic about where we’re going with water management in Florida, and am especially pleased with the St. Johns Water Management District, a district with which I am most familiar.”
