born in Omaha, Nebr., May 15, 1915; received early education in the public schools of Evanston, Ill.; attended Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., 1933-1936, and the Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College in 1937; studied law and finance at New York University Graduate School in 1938; engaged in investment banking with Kidder, Peabody & Co., in 1937 and 1938 and commercial banking with Manufacturers Trust Co., in 1938 and 1939; executive of Bendix Aviation Corp., 1940-1943 and Yale & Towne Manufacturing Co., 1945-1950; also engaged in farming, mining, and real-estate development; during the Second World War served in the office of the Under Secretary of the Navy; served on the political staffs of Wendell Willkie and Gov. Thomas E. Dewey and of Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon; chairman of the United Nations Committee to Build World House at the United Nations; mining operations at Portola, Calif., and land development at Salton Sea, Calif.; United States delegate to several NATO Parliamentarians Conferences; United States delegate to UNESCO; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-sixth Congress and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1959-January 3, 1965); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1964 to the Eighty-ninth Congress; unsuccessful candidate for nomination in 1972 to the Ninety-third Congress; was a resident of Woodside, Calif., until his death in Redwood City, Calif., on June 14, 1988.
