Info | born in Somerset, Pulaski County, Ky., January 12, 1902; moved with his parents to Huntsville, Scott County, Tenn.; attended the public schools of Scott and Knox Counties, Tenn.; was graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1922 and from its law school in 1924; was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1923 and commenced the practice of law in Huntsville, Tenn.; publisher of a weekly newspaper in Huntsville, Tenn.; served in the Tennessee house of representatives in 1929 and 1930; member of Scott County Board of Education in 1931 and 1932; attorney general of the nineteenth judicial circuit of Tennessee 1934-1948; vice president and general counsel of the Oneida & Western Railroad Co., in 1945; member of the board of directors, First National Bank of Oneida, Tenn.; unsuccessful Republican candidate for Governor in 1938 and for United States Senator in 1940; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1940, 1948, 1952, and 1956; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1951, until his death in Knoxville, Tenn., January 7, 1964; interment in Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
