Candidate for U.S. House (DR-NC) 1813
U.S. Representative (DR, NR, W-NC) 1815-1842; chairman, Committee on Claims (Fifteenth through Twenty-first Congresses), Committee on Territories (Twenty-third Congress). Speaker Andrew Stevenson removed him from the Committee on Clains in 1828 for supporting the re-election of Pres. John Quincy Adams.
Williams supported William H. Crawford in the 1824 Presidential Election
He became a National Republican during the J.Q. Adams administration and joined the Whig Party in 1834.
Never married.
Active in the North Carolina Bible Society [Raleigh Register 12/17/1841]
At the time of his death, Williams was called the "father of the House," meaning that he had the longest continuous service. [NYC Weekly Herald, 4/30/1842]
Died in Washington, D.C., February 23, 1842; interment in Panther Creek Cemetery, Surry County, N.C.
