Info | Former Attorney General and State Senator. Current State Auditor.
Betty Montgomerys entire career has focused on protecting Ohios most vulnerable citizens. She has prosecuted criminals, helped victims, protected taxpayers, reshaped Ohio law, and continues to provide professional services to local government agencies as Ohios first woman Auditor of State. Sworn in as Ohios 30th State Auditor in January 2003, she has also served the public as a criminal prosecutor, state senator, and Ohios first woman Attorney General. Auditor Montgomery is dedicated to meeting the commitments she has made to the people of Ohio -- to serve as a watchdog of public funds by aggressively rooting out fraud and waste of public dollars and to provide taxpayers with the highest level of professionalism, service, and accountability.
Auditor of State Montgomery is a graduate of Bowling Green State University (1970) and the University of Toledo College of Law (1976). She began her career as a criminal clerk for the Lucas County Common Pleas Court. In 1977, she became assistant prosecuting attorney in Wood County. Later she became Perrysburg city prosecutor where she served until she was elected to serve as the Wood County prosecuting attorney. During her eight years as prosecutor she increased the felony conviction rate in her office by 250 percent.
The people of the 2nd Ohio Senate District (northwest Ohio) elected Montgomery to the Ohio Senate in 1988. She served as chair of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, and the vice chair of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission. In the
Senate, her work included drafting Ohios first living will law, its first brownfields legislation, and its Victims Rights Law. Much of her work centered on crime and law enforcement, as well as efforts to help protect consumers, children, and the elderly.
As Ohio Attorney General, Montgomery fulfilled commitments to provide increased state support for local law enforcement and to upgrade the states crime labs, joining only four percent of the nations law enforcement agencies by earning accreditation for both the Ohio Peace OfficerTraining Academy and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. Among other top priorities, Montgomery emphasized the protection of Ohios most vulnerable citizens senior citizens, youth, and crime victims. Nationally, Montgomery has been recognized for excellence in service and advocacy, including:
Receiving the Best Brief Award for briefs filed with the U.S. Supreme Court an unprecedented six years in a row from the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). No other state ever received this award for more than two consecutive years.
Receiving four national awards for the innovative WebCheck background check program that eliminates potentially damaging delays on checks of individuals who work with vulnerable citizens.
Receiving the annual Consumer Agency Achievement Award from the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators. This award recognized Montgomerys Consumer Protection Section as the most outstanding in the nation.
