Info | Lawrence "Larry" Redmond was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 17, 1943. He has four siblings, Madeleine Ann Redmond, Lauren Craig Redmond, Peter Kelven Redmond and Stephen Henry Watkins, Sr. He has two children, Masai and Maya, from his marriage in 1967 to Bess Peoples. He is currently married to Luanne Bethke Redmond. They have five daughters, Geneva Marie, Sarai Bernice, Darcy Malita, Abina Grace and Leni Louise. They live on Chicago’s south side.
Larry Redmond has a wide background in law, computers and public service. He is licensed to practice law in Illinois, and has practiced in the criminal, corporate and computer fields. He has also done graduate work toward a Master of Science degree in telecommunications, and has worked as a computer systems analyst for a number of major companies and on a free-lance basis. He has been published several times in legal and scholarly journals and is currently working on a new novel.
He is a member of the Chicago Alliance of African-American Photographers. He is a past member of the Washington Park Camera Club. He has published four volumes of photographs: Self-absorbed: A Nude Self-Portrait in 2010, NATO Week in Chicago: Images of the Peoples’ Summit & the Nurses’ Robin Hood Rally in 2012, **** NATO in Chicago: A Photographic Essay of May 20, 2012 in 2012 and Self-absorbed II: Nude Self-Portraits and Still Lifes in 2017. The self-portraits were published under a nom de plume that he used for many years, Obi.
He has written five novels, A Feast of Peonies, The Last and Final King, The Reward of the Fool, Why to Kill a Billionaire and Death to the Equestrians. He has a collection of short stories entitled Satan’s Anvil, and a stage play published in book form entitled A Lake of Fire. All of these works have been published by Penknife Press.
Redmond graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1960 and served in the U.S. Air Force until 1964. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in San Antonio, Texas, then went for further training at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas. He was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany, for three years working in intelligence.
After a short return to the U.S. where he worked at several odd jobs, he spend 15 months traveling in Europe where he hitch-hiked from Lapland in Scandinavia to Morocco in North Africa working along the way at a variety of jobs from farm hand to factory worker to dishwasher to carpenter’s assistant, mainly in Sweden and Germany. His international travels have taken him to Oslo, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Paris, France; Cologne, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; Tangier, Morocco; and throughout many parts of Canada from Nova Scotia on the east coast to British Columbia and the Yukon on the west.
Upon his return to the United States, he attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he majored in Philosophy and minored in English. He did further graduate work and later attended the John Marshall Law School, earning a Juris Doctor degree. He has done graduate work in Computer Science and Telecommunications at De Paul University. He has studied Art and Photography at Chicago State University.
He has been active in third-party politics. He ran for Mayor of the City of Chicago on the Harold Washington Party ticket in 1995, Cook County States Attorney on the Harold Washington Party ticket in 1996 and Governor of the State of Illinois on the Reform Party ticket in 1998. He is currently a civil rights activist with the Illinois Coalition Against Torture (ICAT), the Illinois Campaign to End the New Jim Crow (ICENJC), and the Chicago Alliance Against Racial and Political Repression (CAARPR), where he is general counsel.
His other interests include yoga, meditation and traveling with his family and their travel trailer. He and his family have camped throughout North America.
