Info | SILER, Eugene, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Williamsburg, Whitley County, Ky., June 26, 1900; attended the public schools; graduated from Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Ky., in 1920 and from the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1922; law student at Columbia University in 1922 and University of Kentucky until 1924; was admitted to the bar in 1923 and commenced the practice of law in Williamsburg, Ky.; during the First World War served as an enlisted man in the United States Navy, and in the Second World War served as a captain in the United States Army 1942-1945; elected judge of the Court of Appeals of Kentucky in 1945 and served until January 1, 1949; unsuccessful Republican candidate for Governor of Kentucky in 1951; trustee of Cumberland College; director of the Bank of Williamsburg and Kingsport Grocery Co.; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-fourth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1955-January 3, 1965); was not a candidate in 1964 for renomination to the Eighty-ninth Congress; was a resident of Williamsburg, Ky., until his death in Louisville, Ky., on December 5, 1987; interment in Highland Cemetery, Williamsburg.
