Info | William Wesley "Bill" Fincher, Jr.
Former state Sen. William Wesley “Bill” Fincher Jr. passed away Saturday at Hamilton Medical Center.
Fincher, 91, was elected to the Georgia Senate from the 54th district, then composed of Whitfield, Murray, and Catoosa counties.
Fincher, a Democrat, defeated Republican R.S. Thomas for that seat, which is now held by Thomas’ brother, Dr. Don Thomas.
“We were very good friends, and I became a strong supporter of him, and he became a supporter of me after I was elected,” said Thomas.
“He was a great person. He served this area very well for many years, and this is a great loss for the community,” Thomas said.
Fincher went on to serve in the Senate for 26 years. He served as chairman of the Higher Education Committee, chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee, and member of numerous other committees.
“I think he was the best senator we’ve ever had,” said Margaret Ball, a friend and long-time Democratic activist.
“He was very hardworking, very attentive and very courteous. He was just a wonderful person,” Ball said.
Fincher was born May 16, 1914, in Cherokee County, son of the late William Wesley Fincher, Sr., and Mary Amanda Chambers Fincher.
He followed in his father’s footsteps and became a pharmacist. He completed pharmacy school at the University of South Carolina in 1933, and opened Fincher Drug Co. in Chatsworth in 1935 with the help of his brother Jack. Bill met Eunice (Peg) Loughridge, who was a native of Murray County and teaching school there. They were married in Canton on July 6, 1936. After 16 years running Fincher Drug Co., Fincher sold the store and went into the theater business, eventually owning a chain of theaters.
Fincher was active for more than 60 years in the Lions Club, holding various offices. He was also a long-time member of the Masonic Order and a member of both the Murray and Whitfield County chambers of commerce, and he was active in the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. He was an emeritus director and served on the board of directors of Cohutta Banking Co. for more than 50 years. From 1976 to 1982 he served as a trustee of the Dalton State College Foundation and again from 1991-1996.
“He really did a lot of wonderful work for the community in the Legislature and in his private life,” said Thomas.
Fincher joined the First United Methodist Church in Chatsworth in 1935, where he served as chairman of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee for many years.
He is survived by his wife.
Other survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law Mary Jane and Hugh Peterson of Atlanta; Phyllis and Huber Parsons of Coral Gables, Florida; Frances and Nat Hansford of Dahlonega. Grandchildren Hugh Peterson III (Elizabeth Greene), Bill Peterson, Richard Peterson, Patience Peterson, Huber R. Parsons III (Angela Barr), William Parsons (Molly McClintock), Christine Parsons, Charles Parsons, Nate Hansford and Mary Frances Hansford, and three great-grandchildren: Sarah Jane and Katherine Peterson and Will Parsons.
He is also survived by sister-in-law Ruth Ann Pannell of Atlanta.
The funeral is Monday, at 2 p.m. at the Chatsworth First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Chatsworth Heights Cemetery.
