Info | Karen Ruth Bass
Karen Bass is one of the most effective, creative and respected community leaders in Los Angeles, with a long and successful track record of community service. A lifelong resident of the 47th District, Karen has tirelessly worked on social issues and humanitarian causes. "My life has been defined by the fight for social justice."
While working in the emergency room at L.A. County USC Hospital, Karen was witness to the ravages that crack cocaine had brought to the young men, women and children of the inner city. Karen Founded COMMUNITY COALITION in 1990 to improve the quality of life in South Los Angeles. She has been its Executive Director ever since.
After the 1992 civil unrest, Karen and COMMUNITY COALITION, prevented the rebuilding of over 150 liquor stores. Her work continued with local business owners in converting over 40 former liquor stores into viable, productive businesses.
With the support of corporate officials,Karen and COMMUNITY COALITION focused public attention on the poor quality of meats and produce in South Los Angeles markets. These efforts resulted in improved quality and selection.
Under Karen's leadership COMMUNITY COALITION blocked the planned destruction of homes that had been scheduled for demolition; and instead pressured the Los Angeles Unified School District to utilize three vacant lots for new school campuses. Over $153 million for repair to South L.A. Schools was won due to her efforts, those of COMMUNITY COALITION, and hundreds of high school students.
Through L.A. City Council member Martin Ludlows office, Karen developed a summer pilot program called "SUMMER OF SUCCESS." This innovative program drastically reduced violence in the 10th district, raising over $100,000, that provided recreation and short-term employment for at-risk youth.
Karen helped to convene and create the 8th DISTRICT EMPOWERMENT CONGRESS, a model for L.A.s NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL program. Karen also served on the Los Angeles City Council AD HOC COMMITTEE ON GANGS, YOUTH AND VIOLENCE. The committee founded L.A. BRIDGES, an after-school gang prevention program.
Karen is also involved in the following key community initiatives: FRIENDS OF CRENSHAW/DORSEY COMMUNITY
WORKPLACE HOLLYWOOD
THE HUMAN SERVICES ALLIANCE
AFRICAN-AMERICAN VOTER REPRESENTATION EDUCATION PROGRAM
LIBERTY HILL FOUNDATION
HOMELESS HEALTH CARE.
Karen has dedicated her life to improving our neighborhoods. Her father, DeWitt Bass--a letter carrier for 40 years--and mother, Wihelmina, raised Karen and her three brothers in the Venice/Fairfax neighborhood. Karen graduated from Hamilton High School, earned her Bachelors degree in Health Sciences from Cal State University Dominguez Hills, and her Post Baccalaureate Physician Assistants Certificate at the USC School of Medicine.
Today, Karen lives in the Baldwin Vista neighborhood and is the proud mother of a daughter attending a California university.
Karen's community service has been recognized by her winning the following awards: Rosa Parks Award, Southern Christian Leadership Conference
FAME Award, First African-Methodist Episcopal Church
Thomas Kilgore, Jr. Service Award, The Black Agenda
85 Unsung Heroes Award, California Community Foundation
Charles Bannerman Memorial Fellowship Award
