InfoSIMMONS, Furnifold McLendel, a Representative and a Senator from North Carolina; born on his father’s plantation near Polloksville, Jones County, N.C., January 20, 1854; attended a private school and Wake Forest (N.C.) College; graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University), Durham, N.C., in 1873; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1875; moved to New Bern, Craven County, N.C., in 1876 and commenced the practice of law.

U.S. Representative (D-NC) 1887-1889; unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1888 and 1890.

Appointed by President Grover Cleveland as collector of internal revenue for the fourth district of North Carolina 1893-1897.

Leader of the white supremecist "Red Shirt" campaign of 1898 in which the Democratic Party took control of the state legislature.

U.S. Senator (D-NC) 1901-1931. Simmons was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1900, after defeating Julian S. Carr in the first primary ever held in NC. Chairman, Committee on Disposition of Useless Executive Papers (Sixty-first Congress), Committee on Engrossed Bills (Sixty-first and Sixty-second Congresses), Committee on Finance (Sixty-third through Sixty-fifth Congresses), Committee on Additional Accommodations for the Library of Congress (Sixty-sixth Congress).

Simmons was the only Democrat to file for the NC presidential primary in 1924; as a result, the primary was not held and all of NC's delegates were required to support him on the first ballot.

Although a staunch Democrat, Simmons endorsed Hoover for President in 1928. This move helped Hoover win NC in the election, but it came back to haunt Simmons. He lost the Democratic primary in 1930 to J. William Bailey.

Resided in New Bern, N.C., until his death there on April 30, 1940; interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
