Info | The daughter of an elementary school principal and a Catholic grade school teacher, Rianne Hawkins learned the value of serving her community at an early age. Rianne’s interest in public service led her to the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) in the fall of 1999, where she earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Since then she has made the capital city her home.
Following college Rianne entered into public service, working at every level of government in Springfield – from a constituent services aide in the Office of United States Senator Dick Durbin, a special assistant at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and as a consultant for the Illinois State Senate Democratic Caucus. Since 2011, Rianne has had the honor of serving as the appointed Deputy City Clerk for the City of Springfield.
As Deputy City Clerk, Rianne has led efforts to make the office more digital. She spearheaded a project to develop a new voting system for the City Council and modernize the City Council chambers. She has also worked to provide more information on City services online and started an aggressive outreach effort through the City Clerk’s social media presence. In an effort to begin to build stronger ties between the community and city government, Rianne led the effort to re-establish the Do the Right Thing program, a joint venture between the City of Springfield and Springfield Public School District 186, to help recognize children in our community that are making a positive difference each day. As Deputy City Clerk, Rianne has been actively involved in a variety of professional organizations dedicated to setting the standard for excellence in public service, including membership in the Municipal Clerks of Illinois, International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the Association of Government Accountants, as well as becoming a Certified Municipal Clerk and a certified State of Illinois Freedom of Information Act & Open Meetings Act Officer.
hose improvements are only the beginning of Rianne’s vision for the City Clerk’s office. She will work to make doing business in Springfield easier by helping to lead a City-wide effort to modernize the way City Hall processes every kind of license. She will continue to work through the city Clerk’s website and social media sites to provide more information about City government and better access to City services. Rianne is also committed to better connect community groups to city government through organized outreach and collaborative partnerships.
Rianne is married to Neil Calderon, a high school social studies teacher at Southeast High School. They are the proud parents of Hazel, their two year old daughter. They live in the Historic Westside of Springfield where Rianne is actively involved with the Historic Westside Neighborhood Association. In addition to working with her neighborhood association, Rianne serves on the Walk to Remember Board of the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Illinois Chapter, was an appointed member of the Sangamon County Animal Control Advisory Board and is a member of the MacArthur Boulevard Business Association, Springfield Inner City Older Neighborhoods, Illinois Women in Leadership, American Association of University Women, Springfield NAACP and Faith Coalition for the Common Good.
