Info | Justice Douglas Inge Johnstone was born on November 15, 1941, in Mobile, Alabama, where he attended the public schools, through high school. He then received his bachelor of arts degree from Rice University in Houston in 1963 and his juris doctor degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1966.
He was admitted to the bars of Alabama and of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama in 1966, and later to the bars of the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He performed his military service in the United States Army Combat Engineer Corps and attained the rank of captain.
His practice of law over the years included criminal and civil litigation in the state and federal courts as well as legal work on contract, corporate, probate, real estate, and other office practice matters.
In 1974 Justice Johnstone was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, where he served on the committees on local legislation, conservation, and the judiciary. The Capitol Press Corps elected him Outstanding Freshman Representative in 1975. As a member of the House, he sponsored and passed the Interstate Witness Subpoena Act, the Pay-as-You-Go Road Program for Mobile County, and a comprehensive revised law on commitments of mentally ill persons. He attached hundreds of amendments to the Judicial Article Implementation Act and the Alabama Criminal Code.
Justice Johnstone was appointed an Alabama District Judge in May 1984, was elected to that office in November of the same year, and was constituted Presiding District Judge for Mobile County in January 1985. In August of 1985, Justice Johnstone was appointed an Alabama Circuit Judge and was successively elected and re-elected to that judgeship in 1986, 1988, and 1994. He was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court on November 3, 1998.
Justice Johnstone's hobbies include hunting, boating, and flying. He has built and flown two experimental airplanes, both certified by the F.A.A.
Justice Johnstone has one son, Inge, who recently graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Law and who currently practices with the Mobile firm of Johnstone, Adams, Bailey, Gordon & Harris.
