InfoBorn in 1949, Steve Harrison moved to the NY’s 13th Congressional District in 1952 where he has resided since. Steve lives on the Brooklyn side of the district, but maintains strong Staten Island ties as well. His mother and sister currently live on Staten Island, his daughter attended the College of Staten Island and his father is buried on the South Shore.

A product of parochial schools, Steve graduated with a BA in Mathematics from Marist College in Poughkeepsie. While at college he met his future wife, the former Alice McKeon, a student at nearby SUNY New Paltz. Alice is currently a human resource manager for one of the world’s largest insurance companies. They have two children, Michelle, a New York City teacher and Jeff who performs business development for an international shipping company.

Upon graduating from Marist, Steve worked full time as a paralegal while simultaneously attending Brooklyn Law School full time. After earning his law degree in 1974 he practiced trial law for the Madison Avenue firm of Esterman & Esterman.

The hours required of attorneys at Manhattan law firms left Steve with little time to see his children. He left Esterman and founded a private practice near his home in 1986 to spend more time with his family. "I had two small children" says Steve. "I wanted them to know I was their father and not a passing shadow in the night."

After 20 years, Steve hasn’t forgotten why he left the glamour of Manhattan law and created a family friendly environment for his employees. His employees never have to entrust the care of their children to outside childcare. Steve allows attorneys and support staff to bring their children to the office. It’s not unusual to find a playpen and children roaming around in his office.

Having a private practice walking distance from home afforded him the free time to coach his kids in soccer and baseball which he views as his entry to civic life. He eventually became his Church’s youth program president.

His civic and political experience and accomplishments include:

* Chair of Brooklyn’s Community Board 10 from 2000-2003. Under his leadership, the board spearheaded Brooklyn’s largest re-zoning effort ever, thwarting residential overdevelopment. Also during his tenure, Steve recommended and successfully fought for a south Brooklyn-Manhattan ferry to ease transportation problems in the trying weeks after 9/11 and approved and improved construction plans for Brooklyn/Verrazano Bridge exits. Steve Harrison is currently Brooklyn Community Board 10's Zoning and Land Use Committee Chair.

* Major staff roles in several campaigns and running for City Council in 2003.

* Being president and a charter member of The American Heritage Democratic Organization.

* Appointed a director of Brooklyn Remembers, a foundation that built at Veteran's Memorial Pier, a memorial for Brooklyn residents who died on September 11. He raised $50,000 towards its establishment and contributed to its design.

* Pro Bono legal work for state senator Vincent Gentile and former law partner and councilman Sal Albanese.

* Key leadership roles with block associations, business improvement groups and policy think tanks.

Steve espouses an active life style, unafraid to take risks in sports and life. He is a licensed pilot and a sky diver (one jump - more to come), and is a self-admitted crummy golfer.

He is an avid Marathoner and cyclist. Just days before the election, Steve will be doing more than just running for office. He plans on running this year’s NY Marathon with his daughter two days before the election. The race starts on the Staten Island side of the district with its first few miles being run on the Verrazano and in the Brooklyn part of the district.
