InfoWalter T. Gunn was born in LaSalle County, June 4, 1879, the son of Luther V. and Alice E. Gunn. His parents moved from LaSalle to Vermillion County in 1880. Justice Gunn received his education in the country schools, in the high school of Hoopeston, at Greer College, and his legal education in Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington. He was admitted to the Bar in 1902. He commenced the practice of law in Danville, and in 1904 entered into partnership with Josh W. Keeslar, with whom he remained until Mr. Keeslar’s death in 1915. From 1916 until 1922 he was in partnership with Judge Platt under the firm name of Gunn & Platt. He became the head of the firm Gunn, Penwell & Lundley in 1922 and so remained until his election as Justice of the Supreme Court in June of 1938. He was re-elected in 1942 without opposition. During his practice of the law he served as Assistant State’s Attorney of Vermillion County, corporation counsel of the City of Danville, and Master in Chancery of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois. He died October 13, 1956 in Danville.
