Info | CAMPBELL, James Edwin, (nephew of Lewis Davis Campbell), a Representative from Ohio; born in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, 7/7/1843; attended the public schools and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; entered the Union Army as a member of the Mississippi Squadron, November 29, 1863, and served until honorably discharged September 24, 1864; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1865; deputy collector of internal revenue, third district; commenced the practice of law in Hamilton, Ohio, in 1867; prosecuting attorney of Butler County 1876-1880
U.S. Representative (D-OH) 1884-1889; chairman, Committee on Alcoholic Liquor Traffic (Forty-ninth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1888
Governor (D-OH) 1889-1891. Introduced the "Australian ballot system" to Ohio elections in 1891. Unsuccessful candidate for Governor in 1891 and 1895
Delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1892, 1920, and 1924
Served on the commission to codify the State laws 1908-1911; resumed the practice of law in Columbus, Ohio, and died there on 12/18/1924; interment in Green Lawn Cemetery.
