Info | Erin Houchin is a conservative Republican from Southern Indiana, representing the 47th District in the State Senate, which includes Crawford, Orange, Harrison, Perry and Washington counties, and eastern Dubois County.
In 2014, Erin defeated a powerful 26-year incumbent who had served as Senate Democratic Leader. In the Senate, Erin quickly established herself as a reliable and capable legislator who gets results for her constituents.
Erin’s priorities are creating good-paying jobs by supporting small businesses and keeping taxes low, giving law enforcement the tools and support necessary to combat the drug epidemic and hold criminals accountable for their actions, improving educational
opportunities for our children by investing in education and empowering parents, and expanding access to affordable and efficient utility and broadband services to rural communities.
Erin helped to create balanced budgets for Indiana every year of her term, and voted to support a Balanced Budget Amendment to Indiana’s State Constitution.
As a member of the Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, Erin has maintained a 100 percent voting record on pro-life issues, passed the only pro-life bill of the 2017 Legislative Session, and has been endorsed by Indiana Right to Life and the Susan B. Anthony List. She is also a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights, and was endorsed by the National Rifle Association in her 2014 campaign.
Erin is a leader on crime and public safety issues, and has authored legislation to protect our communities. In 2017, she authored a bill to increase State Police Officer pay – and worked to ensure the increase was included in the state budget. She authored legislation which allows prosecutors to stack quantities of heroin sold over a 90-day period for an enhanced sentence – cracking down on those who push poison on our streets. She has also worked on legislation to combat the prescription drug epidemic that would require doctors to search a patient’s prescription history to prevent over-prescribing and doctor hopping.
Erin has successfully authored legislation to increase access to affordable and efficient broadband services to rural unserved communities, and was named “Legislator of the Year” in 2015 by the Indiana Broadband and Technology Association for her efforts.
Houchin currently serves on the Commerce & Technology, Elections, Family & Children Services, Tax & Fiscal Policy, and Utilities Committees, and Chairs the Indiana Commission for Improving the Status of Children. She also serves as the Assistant Majority Whip for the Republican Caucus.
Erin received her Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and holds a Master’s degree in Political Management from The George Washington University, where she graduated with honors.
Before beginning public service, Erin worked for the safety and success of children in roles with the Indiana Department of Child Services, the Community Alliance Promoting Education, New Hope Services, and as a trainer for Prevent Child Abuse Indiana.
Prior to serving in the State Senate, Houchin served as Southeast Indiana Regional Director for U.S. Senator Dan Coats and was a Governor’s appointee to the Indiana Commission for Women.
Erin has a long history of grassroots involvement in the Indiana Republican Party and has worked to support conservative candidates at the local, state and national level. In addition, she has provided training on grassroots organization for the Indiana Leadership Forum and the Indiana Republican Party.
Erin and her husband, Dustin, live in Salem with their three children, where they are active members of Mount Tabor Christian Church.
