| Info | Doug was born in Salt Lake City in 1963 to Marlene and Wayne Owens and grew up helping on his father’s political campaigns. He served an LDS mission to France and in 1986 graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Utah. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1989.
In 1988 Doug married the delightful Cynthia Smart, also from Salt Lake. She later graduated from Yale Medical School. After practicing law at a big firm in Washington D.C. for a five years, Doug took two years off to stay home with his three boys, ages 1, 3 and 5 (yeah, that means two in diapers at once!), so Cynthia could finish her medical residency in pediatrics. After that great adventure, Doug went to work as an attorney in Salt Lake City as a litigator and trial lawyer. He has worked extensively in employment law and seen how regulations can weigh heavily on businesses. He has continued to be very involved in home life, largely running the family on the two days a week Cynthia works as a pediatrician.
