Info | John Katko, 51, is a former federal prosecutor and Onondaga County native.
A fresh face and first time candidate for elective office, John is a thoughtful, responsive, and independent public servant who will continue to fight for all Central New York families as our local Representative in Washington.
After attending Bishop Ludden High School, John graduated cum laude from
both Niagara University and Syracuse University College of Law, where he was Associate Editor of the Law Review.
After college and law school, John worked for several years as an associate at a prestigious Washington, DC-based law firm before moving to the
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission where he was responsible for enforcing federal securities law. In 1994, John began a two decades-long career with the U.S. Department of Justice, first as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia and then with the DOJ’s Criminal Division, Narcotic & Dangerous Drug Section based in the Nation’s Capital.
In 1998, John and his wife Robin, a
registered nurse, returned home to Central New York to raise their family. John brought his experience as a Senior Trial Attorney prosecuting major drug traffickers across
the country to the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of New York. Based in
Syracuse, John served as Supervisor of the Narcotics Section before rising to the concurrent positions of Narcotics Chief, Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Coordinator, Binghamton Office Supervisor, Team Leader, and Grand Jury Coordinator.
As a local leader in organized crime and high-level narcotics federal
prosecutions, John was instrumental
in formulating the Syracuse Gang Violence Task Force in 2002 and overseeing a ll gang-related
federal prosecutions since that time, bringing the first-ever successful RICO gang prosecutions to Syracuse.
John’s portfolio also includes work with the region’s successful Weed and Seed programs and multiple high profile money laundering, health care fraud, and political and police corruption prosecutions.
John’s prosecutorial and law enforcement work has received local,
national and international attention.
He has lectured extensively across the country–including at DOJ’s National Advocacy Center as well as Cornell and Syracuse Law Schools–and has trained fellow prosecutors as far away as Croatia and El Salvador. His decorated service has been marked with
recognitions and awards from multiple
U.S. Attorneys General, the Director of the FBI, and the Syracuse Police Department.
