Info | Tom MacArthur is a self-made businessman running for Congress to be a leader in promoting policies that spur job creation and empower people; that ensure our recovery and renewal in the wake of Sandy; that strengthen Social Security and Medicare for our seniors; that provide our military the tools they need to defend our freedom in a dangerous world; and that honor the service of our veterans and their families when they come home.
After graduating from Hofstra University, Tom started out as an Insurance Adjuster in New York City, with an annual salary of $13,000. In the years that followed he went on to build a successful 28-year career in the insurance industry, which culminated in serving as Chairman and CEO of York Risk Services Group, Inc. from 1999 to 2010. Under Tom’s dynamic leadership, thousands of American jobs have been created and preserved, giving families the opportunity to prosper and build a better future.
Tom married his college sweetheart, Debbie over 31 years ago, and they are the parents of three children: Grace, David & Isabella. Gracie, who was born with special needs, sadly passed away at the age of 11 in 1996. David and his wife Erin just bought their first home together and Bella is entering her senior year of high school. Tom’s kids have shown him the incredible worth and potential of every person and inspire him to make a positive difference for the next generation.
Active members of St. Peter’s Church in Barnegat Light, Tom and Debbie created and funded the St. Peter’s Sandy Relief Fund, which aided numerous local families in the wake of the storm. Tom and Debbie also opened their own home in the wake of the storm so others could continue to live and work locally. They are active supporters of Surflight Theater, Friends of Ocean County Animal Shelter, the Fisherman’s Story Memorial, The Soul Kitchen, LBI Foundation for the Arts and other local charities.
Since 2005, Tom and Debbie’s foundation has generously helped fund and support programs for everything from wounded veterans to children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. They have given over 1,600 wheelchairs to persons around the world, in memory of their daughter Gracie, and contributed to local Soup Kitchens and homeless shelters for those in need.
During his time as a local Mayor and Councilman, Tom helped his town remain 1 of only 19 municipalities in New Jersey – and one of only 213 in the entire U.S. – to earn a AAA bond rating, while maintaining one of the lowest per capita tax burdens in the region.
