Info | Charles H. Thompson was born on a farm near Mount Vernon, Indiana, December 11, 1886. His preliminary education was received in the public schools of Harrisburg. After working four years as a stenographer and law clerk in Chicago, he graduated from the Chicago Kent College of Law in 1918. He was admitted to the Bar in 1919. He served as State’s Attorney of Saline County 1920-24 and was elected to the Senate in 1926 where he served until 1935, and again from 1939 until he was elected to the State Supreme Court. Affiliated with the Republican Party, he was a member of the Lincoln Memorial Commission 1929-32, the Illinois Century of Progress Commission 1933-34, and was President of the Federation of Local Bar Associations of the first Supreme Judicial District 1936-37. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 1942 and served as its Chief Justice in 1945, 1946, 1949 and 1950. Justice Thompson died in November 1972, and is buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Harrisburg, Illinois.
