Info | Tamar Zandberg is a Member of Knesset with Meretz. In the 20th Knesset, she serves as the Chair of the Knesset Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and she is the first person in this position to support legalization of cannabis. She is also a member of the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee and Chair of the Lobby for Encouraging and Improving Public Transportation (the Lobby for Sustainable Transportation) as well as the Urban Lobby.
Zandberg has an LL.B. from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Psychology and Economics from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She also holds an MA in Social Psychology from Ben-Gurion University in the Negev, which she completed summa cum laude. Prior to her election to the Knesset, Zandberg was a Ph.D. candidate in Politics and Government at Ben-Gurion University and a lecturer at Sapir College.
Before entering the Knesset, Zandberg was member of the Tel Aviv City Council, and she served as Chair of the Social Home group in NA'AMAT, a member of the Control Committee of the Histadrut’s House of Representatives, and Chair of the Board of the Israel Bicycle Association.
Tamar Zandberg is an activist for human rights and women's rights, and she has participated in the campaign by Women of the Wall, in the effort against distributing prostitutes' calling cards on the streets, and others. She is among the leaders in the campaigns to promote public transportation on Saturday, to protect natural resources from tycoons, and in the fight to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding the Eilat–Ashkelon Pipeline Company (EAPC). She is among the leaders in promoting animal rights, animal protection and improved living conditions. Zandberg initiated a draft law requiring that vegan meals be served alongside regular meals in the workplace.
Zandberg was elected to the 19th Knesset, when she served as member of the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, the Committee for Promotion of Status of Women and Gender Equality, and on the Joint Committee of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee; the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee; and the Science and Technology Committee on the Biometric Identification Law. She also served as Chair of the Subcommittee on Israel's Beaches.
One of her first actions as a MK was to join the Women of the Wall during the Rosh Hodesh (New Moon) prayers, in solidarity with their struggle for religious freedom. During the 19th Knesset, Zandberg submitted bills designed to require public transportation in new neighborhoods, impose a dedicated tax on ghost apartments, prohibit discrimination in medical treatment and education, limit defense exports to countries that violate human rights, prohibit the collection of entrance fees to beaches, prevent police violence, and protect against disclosure of biometric information.
Zandberg created the Lobby for Sustainable Transportation, which seeks efficient public transportation and the creation of bike paths, sidewalks, access roads, etc., and served as co-chair. She also established of the Urban Lobby, which seeks to strengthen and expand cities, based on economic, social and ecological motives.
Early in her term during the 20th Knesset, Tamar Zandberg won the Green Globe Award from Life and Environment, for her public work to promote environmental protection and legislation on issues of environmentalism and sustainability.
