Info | Born into extreme poverty in Maryville, Tennessee, Angelia Stinnett experienced instability and disparity at a young age. These experiences have given her a sense of compassion. She knows that being indigent is not about being “lazy” and everything to do with poor education, a lack of class mobility, and limited opportunity. As a child of a teenage mother who was uneducated and unskilled, she learned first-hand about social injustice, which gives her an understanding of how economic status shapes our development, outlook, and opportunities, and how they affect us as individuals and as a nation. Through the hardship of her upbringing, she does not see how catering to a privileged class and blaming the poor is in anyway rational, reasonable, or acceptable.
After high school, Angelia enlisted in the Tennessee Air National Guard and later completed an associate’s degree at Jackson State in Jackson, Tennessee. She married David Stinnett in 1998 and took parental responsibility for her nephew, Jason, that same year. The following year, they purchased a modest home and in 2001 welcomed their son, Hunter.
When Jason graduated high school and Hunter started kindergarten, Angelia returned to finish her degree in political science and communications at the University of Tennessee at Martin, and in that time wrote a weekly politically-oriented column for the Jackson Sun. Upon her graduation in 2010, the Stinnetts relocated to Chattanooga, as David accepted a position with the new Volkswagen manufacturing plant. Later that year, the Stinnetts purchased a home in Hixson.
Angelia is happy to volunteer her time and has memberships with various organizations, such as Sierra Club, the Greater Chattanooga Democratic Club, City of Chattanooga Park and Recreations Park Stewards, and the Chattanooga Area Foster and Adoptive Care Association. Angelia has been actively involved in local politics since relocating to Chattanooga. She has been an activist for issues related to environmental protection, education, women’s rights, and more.
The Stinnetts are currently relative-care givers of a newborn child as well and are proud to be striving to improve the quality of life for future generations. Angelia looks forward to helping make our beautiful state of Tennessee an even better place in which to live and raise our families.
As part of her campaign, Angelia has launched the Truth Campaign, which will be to assist the people of Tennessee in being more informed and involved in legislation, as it is presented in committee and in session.
