Info | Bob Crawford was born on January 26, 1948, in Bartow, Florida, in the heart of Central Florida citrus and cattle country. He currently presides over the largest state agricultural department in the United States charged with preserving agriculture and protecting consumers. Before being elected Commissioner of Agriculture, he had a distinguished 14-year career in the Florida Legislature, culminating with the Senate Presidency.
He has deep roots in agriculture, including a longtime personal involvement in citrus ranching and commercial properties. Crawford has been recognized by the Florida Farm Bureau Federation, Florida Citrus Mutual and the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association for his service to agriculture.
As Agriculture Commissioner, he oversees the largest state agriculture department in the United States, supervising more than 3,500 employees. His Department has primary responsibility to protect and promote Florida=s $6 billion agriculture industry, ensure the safety of the state=s food supply from the farm to the processing plant to the supermarket, manage nearly 1 million acres of forest land and protect consumers.
Crawford has championed the preservation of Florida=s agriculture industry in an increasingly urban state and has been a vocal advocate for a safe, abundant, domestic food supply. He pushed for funding to help dairy farmers implement environmentally responsible best management practices. And, he has taken a lead in charting the state=s water policy to ensure the continued availability of this vital resource for agriculture.
During his term as Senate President, Crawford was twice named the most effective state lawmaker. He also earned the coveted AAllen Morris Award@ for most effective member of the Senate in 1988. Crawford used the power of the Senate Presidency to put a constitutional amendment on Florida=s ballot requiring meetings of the Florida Legislature be open to the public. Through that effort, Crawford became recognized by citizen advocacy groups as a champion of government openness and accountability.
