InfoMy family and I have lived in St. Johnsbury for nearly 15 years, but my Vermont roots extend back to my childhood on a dairy farm in Shoreham. Growing up on a farm I learned to appreciate the practical beauty of our working landscape and the moral duty to look out for your neighbors. My first political act occurred in middle school, when I wrote a letter to the editor of our community newspaper calling for better school policies around bullying after my younger brother was targeted.

My activism led me to a number of volunteer roles through the years, including providing support to women reentering the community following incarceration, fundraising and helping to build a house with Habitat for Humanity, and my current work as a volunteer literacy mentor with Everybody Wins! Vermont.

I studied gender and family at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1993 with a degree in Sociology. After working with a number of small businesses in sales, marketing, and human resources, I took some time after the birth of my first child to realign my career goals with my passion for social justice. This led me to Umbrella, where I first served as a volunteer hotline advocate for victims of domestic and sexual violence, then volunteer coordinator, and finally to my current position as Executive Director in 2001.

In 2010 I returned to college for my masters degree, and graduated in 2011 with a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. My studies included negotiation, budgeting, communication, strategic management, ethics, and social policy.

As the mother of two daughters, the personal is political for me. I am running for office because after more than a decade of pulling women and children from the metaphorical river of inadequate policies and protections, I’m ready to go to the place they are being thrown overboard because I know I can make a difference.
