InfoOne of Canada's most experienced Parliamentarians, Derek Lee was first elected in 1988, and subsequently re-elected in each of the last four elections. Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated a commitment to rise above partisanship and work collaboratively with his fellow Members of Parliament in order to accomplish measurable results.

Mr. Lee's is one of Parliament's foremost experts on National Security, and some of his most important policy work may be found in this area.

At the request of the Prime Minister, he recently Chaired the Interim Committee on National Security, which developed proposals on the composition and mandate of a permanent Parliamentary Intelligence Committee, and chaired the committee that provided the first ever Parliamentary scrutiny of Supreme Court appointments-both important steps forward in the Government's democratic reform action plan. Previously, the House adopted Mr. Lee's Motion creating oversight of the Communications Security Establishment. He was a leader in the first Parliamentary review of Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), and has Chaired the National Security Subcommittee for many years. He is also a working member of the Canada/US Parliamentary Friendship Group, specializing in national security policy.

Mr. Lee was a member of the House of Commons Justice Committee for over 12 years. He has Chaired the Procedure and House Affairs Committee and served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Government House Leader. In the current Parliamentary Session, he is Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, and a member of the Special Joint Committee for Scrutiny of Regulations. Continuing his work on national security, he is collaborating in the development of House legislation for the above-mentioned Parliamentary Intelligence Committee, anticipated shortly.

An engaging and knowledgeable representative of his Liberal Caucus and Party views, Mr. Lee is a regular guest on television and radio news panels discussing the issues of the day. In particular, he appears each Friday morning on CBC Newsworld with Don Newman.

Mr. Lee is also recognized as an expert in the area of Parliamentary procedure and reform and has published two influential works in this area: one, a law book on the Parliamentary power of subpoena, and the second one on reforms to Parliament.

At home in Scarborough, Mr. Lee is a passionate advocate for environmental initiatives. In 2002, he was the driving force behind federal government decision to set aside 7000 acres of Federal lands as protected green space on the Oak Ridges Moraine, connected to the Rouge Park. He has also worked tirelessly for the preservation of the Rouge Valley park system and continues to serve as a voting member of the Rouge Park Alliance.

Born in Halifax, Mr. Lee obtained a B.A. from the University of Toronto and an LL.B from Queen's University. Prior to entering politics, he practiced law in Toronto.
