Mr. Wood was re-elected for a fourth term in November 2000. He is currently a Member of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs.

He has served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations and in October 1997, was elected by the Canadian Delegation as Vice-Chair for the NATO sub-Committee on Enlargement and New Democracies at the NATO North Atlantic Assembly.

Mr. Wood also serves as President of the Canada-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group.

In June 1998, Prime Minister Chrétien appointed Mr. Wood Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs.

In Opposition, he was Associate Critic for Forestry, Northern Ontario Development and Northern Affairs as well as Chair of the Northern Ontario Caucus. He was a member of the standing committees on Communication and Culture; Human Rights and Status of Disabled Persons, Natural Resources; and National Defence and Veterans Affairs.

Prior to his parliamentary career, Mr. Wood worked as a Broadcaster for Telemedia Inc., in North Bay, Ontario. He had been in radio broadcasting for 24 years. Mr. Wood also served in the RCAF from 1959 to 1964.

Heavily involved in community affairs, Mr. Wood has been honoured for his work with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Easter Seals, Knights of Columbus, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He was a North Bay City Councillor from 1975 to 1978 and Deputy Mayor from 1975 to 1976; Chairman for 4 years of the Parks and Recreation Department; Member for 4 years of the North Bay General Governing Committee; and Director for 4 years of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.

Born in Ayer's Cliff, Québec, Mr. Wood has three daughters.
