| Info | A Los Angeles native and resident of over 50 years, Danette E. Meyers began her legal career in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office as a Senior Law Clerk. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego (Revelle College) in 1980 and a Juris Doctor degree from Howard University School of Law in 1983.
A VETERAN TRIAL PROSECUTOR WITH UNPRECEDENTED EXPERIENCE FIGHTING SERIOUS CRIMES
During her quarter century of service as a Deputy District Attorney, Ms. Meyers has prosecuted nearly 200 jury trials, including 42 murder trials and six death penalty trials.
Ms. Meyers’ first assignments as a Deputy District Attorney were in the Inglewood and Beverly Hills Area Offices where she prosecuted a variety of misdemeanor jury trials and felony preliminary hearings. Later, she practice in the Torrance Branch and Downtown Central Trial Offices where she tried, to verdict, over fifty felony trials with some of the County’s most experienced litigators.
In 1990, Ms. Meyers was selected to join the Career Criminal Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. For the next five years, she tried over sixty felony jury trials involving murder, attempted murder, residential burglary, kidnapping for robbery, bank robbery and several of the high-profile “Rolex” and “Follow-Home” robbery cases.
In 1996, Danette Meyers became a member of the Special Trials Division of the Van Nuys Branch Office, where she convicted local area socialite Susan Rhea of second-degree murder for killing a motorist while driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Ms. Meyers also prosecuted and obtained a death verdict against Robert Carrasco for the brutal shooting of two Los Angeles area residents as well as obtaining one of the first convictions of a serial rapist utilizing DNA evidence.
In 1997, Ms. Meyers joined the elite Crimes Against Peace Officers Unit, where she successfully prosecuted the most serious crimes against sheriff’s deputies and police officers. In April 1999 she was appointed to be the Deputy-in-Charge of the Bellflower Area Office where, in addition to her supervisory duties, she prosecuted and obtained a death verdict against Bernard Nelson. The case was featured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times and has been the subject of several television documentaries.
In June 2001, while Deputy-in-Charge of the Florence/Firestone Area Office, Ms. Meyers prosecuted her fourth death penalty case involving the murders of Officer Brian Brown and seventeen-year old Gerardo Sernas. The defendant was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of deliberate, willful, premeditated attempted murder.
In June 2002, Ms. Meyers was assigned to the Compton Branch Office where she successfully prosecuted a number of homicide cases, namely the killing of Los Angeles Unified School Teacher, Kathryn Dawson.
In October 2006, Ms. Meyers was assigned to the Airport Branch of the LA County District Attorney’s Office where she continued to prosecute serious crimes. She successfully convicted Ricky Rene Madison of the brutal torture murder of his girlfriend and James Heard for the first degree torture murder and sexual assault of an eleven year old. Both cases resulted in death verdicts.
A DECORATED PROSECUTOR
Danette Meyers has been named Prosecutor of the Year twice by both the LA County Bar Association and the Century City Bar Association. The Daily Journal, California’s most respected legal journal named her one of California’s top 100 lawyers. Ms. Meyers has received the Charles English Spirit Award by the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Delegation to the Conference of Delegates of California Bar Associations (CDCBA). She was awarded the CLEO Legacy Diversity Award for her passion, diligent pursuit and undaunted commitment to diversity in the Legal Profession. In 2009 Ms. Meyers received the Jim Pfeiffer Award from the Conference of Delegates of California Bar Associations. Danette Meyers has also successfully chaired the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s first Diversity Summit and has been recognized for her contributions to the citizens of Los Angeles County by the Senate as well as the Board of Supervisors.
AN EXPERIENCED LEADER
In addition to prosecuting close to 200 jury trials including 42 murders and six death penalty trials, Ms. Meyers has maintained a leadership position in both the State and County Bar Associations. She has been an active member of the Conference of Delegates for over twenty years and has served as Vice Chair of its Resolutions Committee and Executive Committee.
In 1997, Ms. Meyers became the first African American Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Delegation to the State Bar Annual Meeting. In 2000, she was elected the Chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. In 2001, Ms. Meyers became a member of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. She also served as an Assistant Vice President, Vice-President, Senior Vice-President, President-Elect and in 2008 became the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s first Female African American President.
Ms. Meyers has also served on the California State Bar Complaints, Audit and Review Board, the Webster Commission, the Board of Directors for the Association of Deputy District Attorneys, and the Executive Committee and Resolutions Committee of the Conference of Delegates. She currently serves on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Judicial Appointments Committee and Appellate Courts Review Committee. Ms. Meyers has lectured for the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the Black Prosecutors Association. In 2009, Ms. Meyers delivered the Commencement Address for the graduating class at the University of West Los Angeles School of Law.
