InfoRuth R. Ehresman recently resigned as Director of Budget Policy at the Missouri Budget Project to pursue public service as a candidate for the House of Representatives in District 78. Ruth held her position at the Missouri Budget Project for almost 6 years. Prior to that, she was the Policy Director of Citizens for Missouri's Children for 11 years. Throughout Ruth’s professional career, she has been privileged to work with- or one behalf of- vulnerable families in a variety of settings.

Ruth began her career at St. Alphonsus “Rock” High School as a secondary teacher and elementary school principal in areas with very low economic status. She directed a neighborhood social service ministry (Joint Neighborhood Ministry) in the neighborhood in which she lives, and worked as the director of family programs in a multi-service agency serving abused/neglected children and their families (the Salvation Army Hope Center for Children).

Ruth has participated in the development of public policy at the state level on issues relating to the budget and revenue, health care, welfare reform, child welfare, nutrition, and childcare. She has served on numerous boards and has been active in many coalitions. Prior commitments include the Reform Organization for Welfare (Board Chair), South Side Women's Center (Board Chair), the Children's Legislative Network, and Metropolitan Congregations United (Executive Council). Ruth is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Vision for Children at Risk, and the Missouri Family Health Council. She is a co-chair of the St. Louis Children’s Agenda, and a member of the Catholic Charities Advocacy Advisory Council, and the statewide KIDS Count Advisory Committee.

In 2007, Ruth was selected as a Health Care Hero in the area of public policy by the St. Louis Business Journal. She was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in 2008. In 2011 Ruth was named Child Advocate of the Year by the Council on Child Abuse and Neglect.

In her private life, Ruth has been a community leader and activist, is an avid tennis player, and directs the music at her church.

Ruth loves the city, its neighborhoods, diverse populations, and architectural gems. She worked closely as a member of a faith-based community organization, along with neighborhood associations, alderpersons and the Mayor to redevelop abandoned retail sites. By working together, the former Sears site (South Grand), Famous Barr site (Chippewa and Kingshighway) and Gravois Plaza were successfully redeveloped. The SouthSide National Bank at Grand and Gravois was saved from being demolished, and now houses both retail and residential units.

Ruth is married to Paul Ehresman. He is a retired Orientation and Mobility Specialist at the Missouri School for the Blind. Although retired, he continues to work there as a wrestling, swimming, track and goalball coach. Ruth and Paul have owned their house in Benton Park for 32 years, rehabbing their 1892 home over time.

Ruth and Paul have two children. Their daughter, Rose Ehresman, is married to Dave Gaither. They have two children, Aeslinn, age 7 and Evan, age 3. Rose teaches special education at Cote Brilliante Elementary Public School in north St. Louis. Dave works for Great Circle, a not-for-profit organization that provides treatment and case management for children in foster care. Their son, Joe, works at Metro Electric selling electric supplies. All of the family are musicians. Ruth coordinates music at her Church, St. Pius V. Paul and Rose sing in the choir and the entire family plays Irish music at St.
Pius V’s Lenten fish fries (voted best
in St. Louis in 2011)! In 2010 she received the St. Louis Archdiocesan Catholic Women’s Artist Award in recognition of her work as a musician.
