Info | A parliamentarian of great integrity and ability, the Honourable David Collenette was first elected in 1974 and re-elected in 1980, 1993, 1997 and 2000. In June 1997, he was appointed Minister of Transport and is Minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area.
He has held many portfolios during his more than 18 years in Parliament: Minister of National Defence and Minister of Veterans Affairs, Minister of State (Multiculturalism), and Parliamentary Secretary to the Postmaster General and to the President of the Privy Council.
He was also a member of the following Standing Committees: Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs, Transportation and Communications, External Affairs, and National Defence.
Before his 1993 election, Mr. Collenette was Executive Vice-President of Mandrake Management Consultants of Toronto. He has also worked in both the life insurance and plastics industries.
For a number of years while in the private sector, Mr. Collenette was involved extensively as a volunteer in overseas democratic development work, and in monitoring elections in countries such as Haiti, Chile, Romania and the Czech Republic.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Glendon College, York University, and has pursued post-graduate studies in legislative behaviour and urban affairs at York University and Carleton University.
He and his wife Penny have one son.
