Info | Ralph Goodale became Minister of Finance on December 12, 2003 and was reappointed to this portfolio on July 20, 2004. He also carries regional political responsibilities for Saskatchewan and the North.
Raised on the family farm near Wilcox, Saskatchewan, and educated at both the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan, Ralph Goodale has practical experience in business, agriculture, law and broadcasting, as well as federal and provincial politics.
He was first elected to the Parliament of Canada in 1974 at the age of 24, representing the federal constituency of Assiniboia. In the 1980s, he served as leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party and in 1986 was elected a member of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly.
Mr. Goodale returned to the House of Commons as MP for Regina-Wascana (now Wascana) in October 1993 and was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. He was re-elected in June 1997 and November 2000. He served as Minister of Natural Resources Canada from June 1997 through January 2002 and as Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons from January to May 2002. In May 2002, he was appointed Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada. He has also been the Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians as well as Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, Communication Canada, and the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution.
