Info | First elected in 1988 for the constituency of Winnipeg North, Dr. Rey Pagtakhan won a fourth consecutive term to the House of Commons in November 2000.
On January 15, 2002, he was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs, and on May 26, 2002, was given the added responsibilities of Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development).
From January 2001 to January 2002, he was Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific).
Previously, he had served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister. He chaired the Standing Committees on Citizenship and Immigration and on Human Rights and the Status of Persons with Disabilities as well as the Western and Northern Caucus. He was Parliamentary Advisor to the Canadian Delegation at the 1992 World Health Assembly in Geneva and was Advisor to the Minister of Health on the Manitoba First Nations Working Group on Health.
Prior to entering politics, Dr. Pagtakhan was a Director of the Manitoba Cystic Fibrosis Centre, a lung specialist, and Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine. He also served as a school trustee and member of the Winnipeg Police Commission.
He served as the Chairman of the Board of Presidents of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, a coalition of 37 national ethnocultural groups in Canada and was National President of the United Council of Filipino Associations in Canada.
He has received the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal, the Missouri and St. Louis Heart Associations' Joint Research Fellowship, the Manila Medical Society First Prize for Basic Research and the Philippine Presidential Citation for Outstanding Filipino Overseas. Most recently, he was awarded an honourary doctorate from the University of the Philippines for his contributions to pediatrics and politics.
Rey Pagtakhan graduated in medicine from the University of the Philippines. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
