Info | “Able” Mable Thomas, a native Atlantan, is currently serving as a State Representative in the Georgia House of Representatives for the second time, the first time from 1985 to 1993. Prior to her return to the House, Ms. Thomas served as Atlanta City Council Member, Post 1, citywide. During her tenure she was a tireless advocate for the elderly, economic development, women and family issues. As the foregoing shows, Ms. Thomas is a veteran grassroots organizer and internationally recognized communications and public policy specialist.
Ms. Thomas is owner of Master Communications, Inc., a communications and leadership business that seeks to empower individuals and organizations to create and control their own unique vision. Her memberships are numerous: The Atlanta Business League, the National Congress of Black Women (NCBW), the National Organization for Black Elected Legislators (NOBEL), Women in Government, the class of 1987 Leadership Atlanta, Regional Leadership Institute, the Center for Women Policy Studies - Foreign Policy Institute, and the National Honor Roll of State Legislators. Ms. Thomas has also been named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Georgia, by the Georgia Informer Newspaper. A consultant to groups as diverse as the National Black Women’s Health Project where she was a Health and Direct Action Coordinator, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives, the Atlanta Public Schools, the Georgia Democratic Party, the African American Institute, and the Pre-Choice Resource Center in New York. Additionally, she has been instrumental in the formation of the Georgia Commission on Women, the Atlanta Women’s Commission and the Pay Equity Study. Ms. Thomas also participated in the 2004 March for Women’s Lives held in Washington, DC.
At the international level, Ms. Thomas has trained and provided educational and motivational workshops throughout the world. She has served as an official United Nations Election Monitor, and travel to Uganda, East Africa to train citizens in grassroots organizing for electoral politics. In December 2000, she served as part of a Human Rights Delegation that monitored elections in South Africa. Also on the international level, Ms. Thomas was invited by Moral Rearmament to sojourn on a reverse yatra in India to trace the steps of Gandhi.
“Able” Mable has extensive experience in bringing diverse groups of people together around issues of importance. For example, her successful tenure as State Legislator where she led statewide campaign to pass landmark legislation requiring that mammograms, pap smears, and prostate exams are allowed under covered medical expenses. This hallmark piece of legislation literally saves families’ lives.
