Info | Mr. Werner Schmidt was born on January 18, 1932 in Coaldale, Alberta. His mother immigrated from the Ukraine and his father from Russia. Mr. Schmidt has been married to the former Teena Friesen for 45 years and they have two married sons, Alan and Dwayne, and two grandsons, Wyatt and Tyler.
Mr. Schmidt's education includes a Bachelor of Education, Secondary and a Masters of Education in Educational Administration, both from the University of Alberta. His thesis was entitled The Relationship between Organizational Climate and Leader Behaviour.
His parliamentary career began on October 25, 1993 with his election to the House of Commons as the representative of the south-central British Columbia riding of Okanagan Centre. He was re-elected for the renamed riding of Kelowna on June 2, 1997. Mr. Schmidt achieved his third straight electoral victory with 60% of the vote in November 2000.
Mr. Schmidt is currently the Canadian Alliance Caucus Chair and the Critic for Seniors� Issues.
Previously Mr. Schmidt held the position of the Canadian Alliance's Critic for Public Works and Government Services. In that role he was the Official Opposition watch dog over Canada Post, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Royal Canadian Mint and Government contracting. In particular Mr. Schmidt vigorously defended the rights of postal franchisees, rural route mail couriers and leaky condo homeowners.
Prior to that he was the Reform Party's Industry Critic for five years and was Vice Chair for the Standing Committee on Industry. As a member of the Committee, Mr Schmidt was instrumental in producing the October 1994 report, Taking Care of Small Business. The Report focused on banks and small business and reviewed access to capital for small and medium sized businesses. In his capacity as Industry Critic Mr. Schmidt also produced a report on Science and Technology, Building a Stronger Science to Commercialization Process: Renewing Support for the Research Infrastructure.
Previous to his career as a Member of Parliament, Mr. Schmidt served in many capacities in both the public and private sectors, including teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools in the Edmonton area; Executive Director of the Alberta School Trustees Association; Executive Committee, Board of Governors, University of Alberta; vice-president -- Academic, Lethbridge Community College; vice-president of Easy-X Cattlemen Ltd., a cattle feedlot; Account Executive, Levesque Beaubien Inc, Edmonton; Director of Development, Okanagan College, Kelowna; and, financial planning and investment advisor.
Mr. Schmidt's community involvement includes membership in Kelowna's Sunrise Rotary International Club and service as a director of the United Way in Kelowna.
