Joseph E. Daily was born at Manito, Illinois. He graduated cum laude from Yale University Law School in 1909. He was a member of Order of the Coif, and received two honorary law degrees. Justice Daily began the practice of law in Peoria in 1909. In 1911, he was elected City Attorney of Peoria and was re-elected for a second two-year term in 1913. In November 1926, he was first elected Circuit Judge of the Tenth Judicial Circuit, and he served continuously thereafter in that court until his election, on June 5, 1948, to the Supreme Court from the Fifth Supreme Court District. He was Chief Justice from September, 1951 to September, 1952 and from September, 1958 to September, 1959. He died July 1, 1965.
