Info | PORTER, James, a Representative from New York; born in Williamstown, Mass., April 18, 1787; was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1810; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Skaneateles, N.Y.; member of the State assembly in 1814 and 1815; elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1819); was not a candidate for renomination; resumed the practice of law; surrogate of Onondaga County 1822-1824; moved to Albany, N.Y., and served as register of the court of chancery until his death there February 7, 1839; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
