Info | COWLES, George Washington, a Representative from New York; born in Otisco, Onondaga County, N.Y., December 6, 1823; attended the common schools, and was graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1845; taught school until 1853; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice in Clyde, Wayne County, N.Y.; judge of the Wayne County court from January 1, 1864, to October 30, 1869; elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress (March 4, 1869-March 3, 1871); was not a candidate for renomination in 1870; resumed the practice of law; again judge of Wayne County court from January 1, 1874, to January 1, 1880, and from January 1, 1886, until his death in Clyde, N.Y., January 20, 1901; interment in Maple Grove Cemetery.
