Info | Attorney & Son of Ex-Lt. Gov. Garland Byrd
Byrd has lived a life in politics without ever holding political office.
As Byrd often mentions in his campaign speeches, he was born "on the Fourth of July during the heat of one of my father's political races." Specifically, it was Garland Byrd's unsuccessful 1954 race for state agriculture commissioner. The elder Byrd, who hailed from Taylor County, served as lieutenant governor from 1959 through 1963. Byrd's campaign stresses his Middle Georgia roots.
Chuck Byrd recollects coming of age under the tutelage of Georgia political leaders such as Denmark Groover of Macon. He went on to become law partner to Walker, the powerful state House majority leader. A network of Democratic state legislators with close ties to Walker is actively campaigning for Byrd.
Although Byrd has never held political office, he cites a life of quiet, local civic service: dedicated church membership, including annual missionary trips to build churches in Honduras. He has served as city judge of Reynolds, city attorney for Reynolds, Marshallville and Montezuma and served on the state Judicial Nominating Commission.
His campaign talks include frequent references to his father's legacy, and to his own aspiration to emulate Sam Nunn - a Democrat who championed conservative ideas and a strong military. In fact, Byrd's campaign manager is a cousin to Nunn.
