Info | Farmer
Deanna Strickland grew up on a wheat farm in Kansas where she was active in 4-H choosing to show livestock instead of the more traditional projects. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University before marrying Lloyd Strickland and moving to Brooklet, Georgia to join Lloyd in the family farming business.
As a Georgia farmer for over 24 years, Deanna has been active in the physical work of farming, running the tobacco crew and managing the farrowing house. She is the owner of D.L. Strickland, Inc., and grows her own tobacco crop.
Deanna is a member of the Georgia Tobacco Growers Association, served on the Georgia Tobacco Advisory Board, was a Delegate to an Agricultural Trade Mission to Cuba and was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service.
From 1998 through 2000, Deanna Strickland served as spokesperson for The Cotton Group, a group of about 120 farmers who lost approximately $10 million to a trader who illegally transferred the farmers' cotton receipts. Deanna served as press liaison for The Cotton Group and was instrumental in generating and maintaining grassroots support for a cotton indemnity fund. She also testified before State House and Senate Sub-Committee Hearings as well as before Georgia Department of Agriculture Hearings on the problems and loopholes of Electronic Warehouse Receipts in connection with the marketing of cotton.
Through Deanna's persistence and efforts the late United States Senator Paul Coverdell and Congressman Jack Kingston joined The Cotton Group's cause and helped secure a total of $10 million to pay the defrauded farmers. Today the guilty cotton trader is serving time in federal prison.
Deanna Strickland is knowledgeable on migrant worker issues, Canadian timber imports, Georgia water issues as well as cotton, peanut and tobacco programs. She has a long history of being active in advocating for Georgia farmers, including arranging television interviews on farm related issues whenever possible.
Besides being the owner of D.L. Strickland, Inc., Deanna is co-owner of Strickland Farms, which grows cotton, peanuts, tobacco, corn, soybeans, timber and pecans. She is a former co-owner of Streak-A-Lean Hog Farm.
Mrs. Strickland is an active member of Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Agricultural Committee. She is also a member of Brooklet Community Development Association, co-chairing the antique tractor events and chairing the pedal tractor events.
She and her husband Lloyd have been married 24 years and have two children and three grandchildren. They are active members of Brooklet United Methodist Church where Deanna co-chairs the Worship Committee.
