| Info | KALBFLEISCH, Martin, a Representative from New York; born in Flushing, Holland, on February 8, 1804; attended the public schools; studied chemistry; immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City in 1826; engaged in the manufacture and sale of paints; health warden in 1832; school trustee in 1836; established a chemical factory at Greenpoint, N.Y., in 1844; supervisor of Bushwick 1852-1854; unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Brooklyn in 1854; alderman in Brooklyn 1855-1861; mayor 1862-1864; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1865); delegate to the Union National Convention at Philadelphia in 1866; again mayor of Brooklyn 1867-1871; unsuccessful independent candidate for reelection; retired from active pursuits; died in Brooklyn, N.Y., February 12, 1873; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
