InfoHOOPER, Samuel, a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Marblehead, Mass., February 3, 1808; attended the common schools; employed as agent for an importing firm and traveled extensively in foreign countries until 1832, when he engaged in the importing business in Boston, Mass., and later in the iron business; member of the State house of representatives 1851-1853; served in the State senate in 1858; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Appleton; reelected to the Thirty-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from December 2, 1861, until his death; chairman, Committee on Ways and Means (Forty-first Congress), Committee on Banking and Currency (Forty-second Congress), Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures (Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1874; died in Washington, D.C., February 14, 1875; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
