Info | STEWART, James Fleming, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Paterson, N.J., June 15, 1851; attended the public and private schools of Paterson; was graduated from the law department of the University of New York at New York City in 1870; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced the practice of law in New York City; returned to Paterson, N.J., and continued the practice of law in 1875; recorder (criminal magistrate) of the city of Paterson 1890-1895; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1903); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Fifty-fifth through Fifty-seventh Congresses); was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1902 to the Fifty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Paterson, N.J., where he died on January 21, 1904; interment in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
