Info | HAIGHT, Charles, a Representative from New Jersey; born at Colts Neck, Monmouth County, N.J., January 4, 1838; attended private schools in Freehold, N.J., and was graduated from Princeton College in 1857; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1861 and commenced practice in Freehold, N.J.; member of the State house of assembly 1860-1862 and served as speaker in 1861 and 1862; commissioned a brigadier general of militia on May 27, 1861; during the Civil War was in command of Camp Vredenburgh from August 22, 1862, until the close of the war; elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1871); was not a candidate for renomination in 1870; resumed the practice of law; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872, and served as chairman of the State delegation; appointed prosecutor of the pleas; appointed prosecuting attorney of Monmouth County in 1873 and served until his death in Freehold, N.J., August 1, 1891; interment in Maplewood Cemetery.
