Info | A pipe-smoking miner who went down the mines aged fourteen and worked in the industry until elected to represent the mining constituency of Barnsley in 1953, Mason was a senior Labour politician during the late 1960s and 1970s and served in numerous ministerial positions. He is best known as Callaghan's hard-line, and controversial, Northern Ireland Secretary during the late 1970s.
Member of Parliament for Barnsley 1953-1983, for Barnsley Central 1983-1987. Raised to the Peerage as Baron Mason of Barnsley in 1987.
Postmaster General 1968, Minister of State for Power 1968-1969, President of the Board of Trade 1969-1970, Secretary of State for Defence 1974-1976, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland 1976-1979.
