Info | PUTNAM, Harvey, a Representative from New York; born in Brattleboro, Vt., January 5, 1793; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced practice in Attica, N.Y., in 1817; held several local offices; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Patterson and served from November 7, 1838, to March 3, 1839; appointed surrogate of Genessee County in 1840, which office he held until the division of the county, when he was appointed surrogate of Wyoming County, serving until 1842; member of the State senate 1843-1846; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1851); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850; resumed the practice of law; died in Attica, Wyoming County, N.Y., September 20, 1855; interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
