InfoKevin E. Walsh was hired as a Deputy Sheriff with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office in 1966. During his career, he was promoted through the ranks until he retired as Captain in 1986. Walsh retired to accept the position of Director of Public Safety with SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He returned to the Sheriff’s Office when he was elected Sheriff in November 1994. He also served as an Onondaga County Legislator from 1990 to 1995 and was Chairman of the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee. Walsh served in the US Army Military Police and received a Purple Heart and an Air Medal with nine clusters. Walsh received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from SUNY Oswego. In addition, he has attended more than 70 specialized criminal justice courses. His numerous professional affiliations include the NYS Law Enforcement Training Directors’ Association, E-911 Advisory Committee and the National Sheriffs’ Association. Presently, he serves as adjunct faculty member at Keuka College, is an instructor at the National Sheriffs’ Institute in Colorado, a member of the NYS Law Enforcement Accreditation Council and is President of the National Heritage Charter School Board in Syracuse. Sheriff Walsh is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office has 650 employees who serve a population of 459,000 and an area of 827 square miles.
