| Info | Assemblyman Chris Friend is the new representative for the 137th Assembly District. The 137th Assembly District consists of cities and towns in parts of Schuyler and Chemung counties.
A native of Big Flats and a 1991 graduate of Horseheads High School, Chris completed a BS in Chemistry at the University of New Hampshire before earning Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was named a National Science Foundation IGERT Fellow and has published more than 20 scientific papers and symposiums.
In 2004, Chris felt a strong urge to contribute to his local community and undertook public service on advisory boards and commissions for the Town of Big Flats. Just two years later, he was elected to the Chemung County Legislature, where he served on the Aviation, Health and Human Services, Highway, and Rules committees.
Chris is heavily involved in the local community as a member of the Big Flats Lions Club and contributes as a coaching assistant for the River Rats Swim Team. He is an integral part of Big Flats Community Days, serving as a member of the Board, and as the Parade Coordinator. Chris also serves on an important committee for the Chemung County Nursing Facility.
Chris and his wife, Renée, met in ninth grade and have been together ever since. They followed each other to college and graduate school, during which they got married. After the arrival of their baby daughter, Brianna, Chris and Renée were motivated to be closer to their families. They left Buffalo and returned to their roots, buying a house in Big Flats where they reside with their children – Brianna (9), Joshua (7), Ashley (5), and Elijah (3).
