Info | Many of her friends and neighbors in Brandywine Hundred know Judy Travis as the “stocking lady”. While Judy had always been passionate about volunteering in the community, it was her son Scott’s service in Iraq that drove her to found one of Delaware’s best-known non-profit holiday service organizations.
When Scott told Judy how many of the men in his command weren’t receiving many care packages from home like he was, Judy decided to do something about it. She founded Stockings for Soldiers, and over the last six years, the organization and its 500 volunteers have shipped almost 18,000 Christmas stockings and 100,000 pounds of holiday goodies to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Organizations like Bank of America and Rotary International have recognized Judy for her work with Stockings for Soldiers.
Judy is passionate about public education and as her children progressed through the Brandywine School District, she was a parent volunteer in five different district schools. She has volunteered her time as a Girl Scout leader, Brandywine High School Lacrosse and Band Boosters, and with the Jewish Community Center. She graduated with a BA degree in history from Boston University, where she met her future husband, Dr. Arthur Travis (a Wilmington native and Brandywine High School class of '68). Arthur and Judy have been married for 37 years.
Judy has been actively serving her community since moving here from New Hampshire in 1983 with her husband, Arthur, a Wilmington native, and young children. For the last 23+ years, Arthur and Judy have teamed to serve their community with their successful chiropractic practice as well as with their multi-level community involvement. Judy supervises their office of four employees as Office Manager and handles all financial matters for their busy chiropractic practice.
In addition to her business concerns, Judy took an active role in schools as their three children progressed through the Brandywine School District. For more than 20 years, Judy volunteered at Forwood, PS DuPont and Burnett Elementary Schools, Hanby Middle School and Brandywine High School. While the children were growing up, Judy served for many years as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and as a parent helper for her son's Boy Scout Troop. She was a member of the JCC Camp Committee and helped plan numerous trips for its Teen Travel Camp. She took on leadership roles with Brandywine High School’s parent Lacrosse Boosters, served as president of the Band Boosters and as one of the committee chairs for three senior After-Proms.
When her oldest son, Scott, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2001 and then was deployed to Iraq as a 2nd Lieutenant, Judy’s attention turned to support of our military. She was appointed by President Bush to the Delaware Selective Service Board # 5 and now serves as its Chairman.
Upon Scott’s safe return from Iraq, Judy founded Stockings for Soldiers, a non-profit organization of over 500 hands-on volunteers and many more supporters. The mission of the project is to sew, stuff and ship Christmas Stockings to our deployed troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the six years since she started this community project in her living room, Stockings for Soldiers - Delaware, Inc. has become a 501.c.3. nonprofit Delaware corporation and has grown to occupy a borrowed 5,500 sq. ft. storefront in Branmar Plaza Since its inception, Stockings for Soldiers has shipped almost 18,000 stockings and 100,000 pounds of Holiday goodies to our brave young men and women serving in harms way.
For her volunteer work in support of our troops, Bank of America recognized Judy with its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative “Local Hero Award”. In additional recognition of her Stockings for Soldiers project, she was presented a Paul Harris Fellow Award by Naamans Rotary Club and a “Spirit of Rotary Award” by Rotary International District 7630.
Judy was born in Vienna, Austria where her father served with the US Army during the reconstruction period following WW II as an Army War College Professor in Germany and Austria. The family later lived in Japan, where her father accepted a teaching position as a Professor of English Literature at International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. They then moved to Miami Beach, Florida where Judy attended public schools, graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School. She graduated with a BA degree in history from Boston University, where she met her future husband, Dr. Arthur Travis (Brandywine High School Class of '68), with whom she has been married for 37 years.
Early in her professional life, Judy worked as media planner and director for several advertising agencies in Boston and later as an advertising and public relations consultant that included Computermania, the first-ever computer technology consumer trade show in Boston.
In addition to managing their busy small business, Judy pursued her life-long interest in politics that started as a young girl growing up in South Florida where she worked on many successful political campaigns with her Mother who was a political consultant and advisor to numerous state, local and national candidates. She has volunteered with the Delaware Board of Elections helping the local political process as a poll worker, poll checker and poll judge.
Judy and Arthur's son, Scott, now works for Boeing and resides with his wife, Jeanne, and their two children in Reston, VA. Daughter, Mariel, lives in New York City, and works as a business analyst in the office of the vice-chairman of UBS. Their younger son, Jeff, is a senior at West Virginia University, majoring in Journalism.
